Mindanao Island

Our Deaf Center at Davao on Mindanao Island provides high standard Kindergarten to College education for the deaf. There are approximately 100 students attending this school. Most come from remote areas and live at the school during the term. They travel home for holidays. Many students have started school late due to distance but are glad to have the opportunity to complete High School and a College Education at a school for the deaf. Some past students have completed College and become Teachers of the Deaf at schools in the Philippines. Small deaf communities have now been established on Mindanao Island where they help each other in times of need. However there are many poor families who cannot afford to pay for education. On the northern part of Mindanao Island at Cagayan de Oro we have a Dormitory where teenagers can live while they attend a High School that caters for deaf students. We have also purchased a rubber plantation where deaf workers will be employed in a few years when the rubber trees are mature, and provide an income to support the schools on Mindanao Island.

Bacolod and Borongan

Deaf Action supports dormitories at Bacolod on Negros Island and Borongan on Samar Island in the Philippines. Students stay at these dormitories and attend a government school. Some students are orphans, and many are teenagers and have started school late because there are no suitable schools near their homes. They are so grateful and happy to go to school and have deaf friends for the first time in their lives. Many of our leaders are deaf themselves and are dedicated to help the deaf children in these areas.

An Organic Farm and Piggery have been commenced near Bacolod where Vocational Training in farm skills is offered to the older students. It is hoped that this project will also provide income to support the Dormitories in the future. Deaf students often excel in computer use and some of our College graduates have established an Internet Café in Bacolod.

The Bicol Area

The Fishermen of Christ Learning Center provides education for deaf children on 2 campuses in this area. The main one at Ligao offers Kinder to College education. The smaller one at Malinao caters for Primary education only. More than 100 students attend the 2 schools combined and older students move to Ligao for Secondary and College education. The campus at Ligao has a ‘jeepney bus’ that provides transport to and from school for students who live close enough to travel each day. These colourful vehicles are a cross between a truck and a bus and are used all around the Philippines for transport. Students who live too far from school to travel stay in the dormitory and travel home when possible.

This school has a farm where rice, vegetables, and various fruits are grown. There is also a rice mill and piggery that help support the school financially. The farm provides an opportunity for older students to gain Vocational Training in farming and animal husbandry. Students can also complete a Computer Course at College here and some have completed further training and become teachers of the deaf themselves.
