Schools in Myanmar

Immanuel School for the Deaf at Kalay in north west Myanmar, was started in 2005, and is the only school for the deaf for hundreds of kilometres. More than 25 children from the surrounding villages attend this residential school. Our school syllabus and exams are set by the local government hearing school and our children are achieving very good results. They are so happy to go to a school and have deaf friends. A new building is nearly completed, giving them better classrooms that don’t leak when it rains! A new kitchen with better fireproofing and a dining room is also in use and we are fortunate to have a well for water in the school grounds. Our aim is to encourage our schools to support themselves in the long term, and we have purchased a rice field that will provide income to help finance this school in the future.

There are many deaf adults in this area who have never been to school. We have now started signing classes for them in a village. One of our teachers, who is deaf himself, travels to the village each weekend and teaches the Myanmar Sign Language. He also teaches them about good health, nutrition and child care, and they are becoming a deaf community that can help each other.
